Laser Demarcation

Laser demarcation, also called Demarcation Laser Photocoagulation (DLP), is an in-office laser procedure used to repair damage to the retina such as retinal tears.

During this procedure, your eye will be dilated. Your surgeon will first numb your eye, then use a specialized laser to direct a beam of light into your eye and seal the tear in your retina. The laser makes small burns in the tissue which causes them to bond together. The procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes, but the treatment length depends on the size of the tear.

You may see some flashes of light while the procedure is being performed. While it is not usually considered painful, there may be some mild discomfort during the procedure. Your doctor may recommend taking an over-the-counter NSAID such as Tylenol. The most common side effects are mild eye irritation and headache. Most people can resume normal activities immediately.
