Autologous Serum Drops

Autologous Serum Eyedrops, sometimes called ASED, are a specialty eye drop made from a patient’s own blood. These drops are used to treat a variety of ocular surface disorders, including:

  • Dry Eye Disease
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome
  • Ocular Herpes
  • Recurrent or persistent Corneal Erosion

Autologous Serum Drops are custom-made for each patient using their own blood. After the blood is drawn in our office, it is allowed to clot. It is then spun in a centrifuge, which separates the serum from the solids in the blood. The serum is combined with sterile saline solution to create a liquid eye drop. Once this process is complete, the serum must be stored in the freezer, where it will last for 6 months.
