Macular Degeneration Services
Macular degeneration is a common eye condition among people age 50 and older. It is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly.
Macular degeneration can be categorized as:
- Dry macular degeneration
- Wet macular degeneration
If a patient notices abrupt vision change, rapid evaluation and possible intervention is important to give the patient the best chance to optimal management.
How is wet macular degeneration treated?
- Avastin, Lucentis, and Eyela, are all injection treatments offered for wet macular degeneration. With wet macular degeneration, abnormally high levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are secreted in your eyes. This substance promotes the growth of new abnormal blood vessels. Anti-VEGF injection therapy can block the effects and slow the progression of wet macular degeneration.
