Understanding the Prevalence of Dry Eye Syndrome in Women

We earlier wrote about how city dwellers are more likely to suffer from dry eye syndrome than their rural counterparts. Apart from one’s area of residence, it looks like gender may also be an indicator on whether or not one is likely to experience the symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

Based on information gathered from the Women’s Health Study, dry eye syndrome is more prevalent in women are in their 40s and 50s. it has been estimated that 1 in 10 women over the age of 75 and 1 in 20 women over the age of 50 in the United States have suffer from one or more symptoms of dry eye syndrome – itching, burning, extreme sensitivity to light, and vision loss.

Specifically, women who undergo hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are most likely to experience symptoms of dry eye. Researchers believe that this may have to do with an imbalance between the hormones testosterone and estrogen. Testosterone is thought to be beneficial to tear glands while estrogen is theorized to inhibit cell production in the tear glands resulting to symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

Sjörgen’s Syndrome
Furthermore, it has been found out that symptoms of dry eye syndrome is also prevalent among those that are diagnosed with Sjörgen’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder which primarily attacks the body’s salivary and tear glands. It is currently estimated that 90 percent of Sjörgen’s Syndrome sufferers are women.

Although dry eye syndrome itself doesn’t have a cure, its symptoms can be treated. For some people, the symptoms may appear to be a nuisance rather than a serious health threat. However, the condition must be taken seriously as it could lead to vision loss if left untreated.
