Three Contact Lens Habits That You Should Stop Doing ASAP

Fast forward to today, contact lenses are an indispensable tool for millions of people. At Mountain View Medical Center, many of our customers lover their contact lenses, but they make some serious mistakes when wearing and using them. Here are three no no’s.
  1. You are sleeping with your contact lenses.
Although certain label instructions may indicate that you can sleep with your contact lenses, we do not recommend it. In general, the cornea needs oxygen and sleeping with your contact lenses will only deprive it of oxygen leading to pain, discomfort, infection, and other forms of irritation. In fact, a review of literature published in the Journal of Optometry revealed that contact lens wearers who sleep with their lenses are more likely to develop Acanthamoeba keratitis.
  1. You are using tap water instead of the special cleansing solution to clean contact lenses.
Tap water may be secure for drinking but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s safe to use in cleaning your contact lenses. Tap water isn’t sterile and soaking your lenses in this type of water will only increase your risk of developing infection from your lenses. This is also the reason why it’s not really a good idea to swim or take a bath with your lenses on.
  1. You are not replacing your contact lens case as recommended.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you replace your contact lens case at least every three months. However, many contact lens users do not replace their cases and would rather place their case in the dishwasher. This practice spells disaster as the dishwasher houses various different kinds of bacteria that could find a home in your lenses, too. Therefore, eye infection is just lurking around the corner!
