Dry Eye Syndrome Shown To Be More Common Among City Dwellers

It looks like there's one more reason to finally make that decision to propose location-independent work to your boss and transfer residence to the countryside. The results of a study that were also announced during the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in New Orleans last year revealed that city dwellers such as those of Chicago and New York were 3 to 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with dry eye syndrome. The aforementioned study is the first large-scale study to prove that environmental factors such as weather conditions and air pollution can indeed influence the occurrence of dry eye syndrome. In addition, another key finding of the study was that people who tend to live in high altitude areas are 13 percent more likely to have dry eye syndrome. Here at our eye care practice in Fairbanks and neighboring areas, there are still patients who tend to suffer from the symptoms of dry eye syndrome despite it being more rural than the cities mentioned with high prevalence in the study. If you think you have symptoms of dry eye syndrome (stinging or burning sensation of the eyes, periods of excess tearing followed by periods of dry eyes, pain, redness, and that gritty feeling of something in the eye), we invite you to get in touch with us!
